Minor Concussions From Accidents

Concussions and other traumatic brain injuries are very serious no matter how minor or major they seem to be. This is why a minor concussion must be treated with equal seriousness as an open head wound, and why concussions are referred to as “silent killers.” For a long time, people would brush off low-grade concussions as just “getting your bell rung,” and the symptoms would be ignored until they resided. Unfortunately, we are only now realizing the long-term impacts of even a minor concussion on a victim, ranging from cognitive decline to serious changes in personality, among many others.

In modern personal injury law, a victim may not treat their minor concussion as they would a broken bone or soft-tissue damage, leaving them to suffer silently through these symptoms and assume responsibility for the financial impacts that these injuries cause. It is not so when you are working with an experienced personal injury attorney, who will be able to contextualize your injuries and quantify them into measurable dollar amounts before negotiating aggressively with the insurance company or responsible party.

Signs of a Minor Concussion

Concussions are usually fairly easy to self-diagnose, especially following a direct blow to the head. However, following a car accident or other accident, whether or not other injuries were sustained, the shock of the incident may distract from the fact that you hit your head, and days later you may find yourself wondering why you feel a mental fog or are dealing with headaches.

Persistent Headache

Headaches are caused by a range of things, including stress, dehydration, or, in the case of a car accident, whiplash. However, if you find you have a persistent headache, or if you are feeling “pressure” in your cranium, this may be an indication of a different type of injury.

Dizziness, Nausea, or Vomiting

If you are experiencing dizziness, feel nauseous, or are vomiting after any type of trauma to the head, this is a major indication there is something else going on — potentially a concussion. Contact your doctor immediately.

Sensitivity to Light or Sound

If you find that sounds or lights that would normally not bother you are causing you pain or discomfort, this is another obvious indication you may have suffered a concussion. If you are having intense reactions, you need to get examined as soon as possible.

Mental Fog or Haziness

Many concussion patients report a fogginess in their thoughts, or an inability to concentrate throughout the day. This may indicate itself as losing focus halfway through sentences, trouble paying attention, or difficulty forming complete thoughts.

Difficulty Remembering

If you are unable to remember the moments before or after the trauma to your head, this is a great indication you have suffered a concussion. In addition, if you are finding your short-term memory is not performing as you are used to, you may be fighting through the symptoms of a concussion.

Personal Injury Claims for Minor Concussions

Many people believe that the minor concussion they are suffering from may not be worth seeking compensation for following an accident, but this could not be further from the truth. The reality is that a personal injury claim is meant to seek compensation for any measurable damage that a victim suffers, and even the most slight concussion most certainly comes with measurable damages. It is not your responsibility as a victim to endure these damages without compensation.

If you are uncertain of your options or ability to successfully file a personal injury claim for your minor concussion, contact the team at 1-800-Injured as soon as possible. Once you are connected with a personal injury attorney, you will be able to discuss all of the impacts of your injury in order to get a clear understanding of how your injuries would be handled in an insurance claim or personal injury lawsuit. Working with the insurance company directly can be intimidating, and knowing what you truly deserve can be difficult — especially when it comes time to defend your settlement counter-offer and negotiate with the insurance agents. Your attorney will handle all of this on your behalf, and you will be able to focus on your recovery and getting back to your daily life as soon as possible.
