Post-operative Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation

Orthopedic surgery is usually followed by physical therapy to facilitate a successful recovery. Physical therapy can start anywhere from a few hours to a few days after surgery, and in some cases involve a period of immobilization after the surgery.

A patient’s ability to regain motion and strength depends on their daily activities and physical therapy. Without retraining of the specific injured areas, a patient risks losing his or her original body functions. Physical therapists are specifically trained to restore range of motion and strength to prevent repeat injuries or further damage during the recovery process.

Immediately after surgery, the body part may be immobilized while pain and swelling subside. Next, the patient performs progressively challenging exercises to restore range of motion, stability, and strength. The ultimate goal is to rehabilitate the patient to a pre-injury activity level.
