The much-anticipated Hurricane Matthews caused quite a stir this past week in South Florida; stores ran out of bread and water, schools closed down for the week, stations were running out of gasoline, and everyone boarded their windows and hid inside.

But, at the last second, Matthew decided to curve northwest. While 155,000 people lost power throughout Broward and Miami-Dade during the conundrum, the damages were minimal and no one was hurt.

Thankfully, South Florida was spared of any devastation; however, states in the northeast are already experiencing floods and coastal damages.

Hurricane Matthew continues to head northwest with winds up to 115 MPH and is expected to surge in the Jacksonville area. More than 500,000 people in Georgia fled the coast as forecasters expect the hurricane to stick around the coastal areas of Georgia and the Carolinas, before possibly looping back towards Florida.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley strongly encouraged residents to evacuate: “This is the last time you will hear my voice asking you to evacuate.”

State officials were particularly worried about high water, in the form of 8-foot storm surges, inundating barrier islands and bringing life-threatening flooding to historic Charleston.

The storm is expected to weaken within the next 48 hours, but to remain a hurricane-force storm until Sunday.
